Growing Economic Strength Attracts Crime

With around 10.5 million inhabitants, approximately 1.2 million of whom live in the capital Prague, and an area of 78,866 km², the Czech Republic is one of the smaller countries in the EU (2014). After decades of occupation—first by the National Socialists and later by the Red Army—as well as economic mismanagement during socialism and under Eastern Bloc control, it is remarkable how much economic strength the country has developed. In 2014, the gross domestic product exceeded 295 billion US dollars, and the unemployment rate stood at 5.6%—figures many other countries can only aspire to. The majority of GDP is generated in the service sector, while the automotive industry (Škoda), metal production and processing, mechanical engineering, the food industry, and the chemical and pharmaceutical industries form the backbone of the Czech economy.
